George I

... was born in 1660, and married his first cousin Sophia Dorothea of Celle in 1682. (Celle is a town and district in Germany.) The couple seem never to have been close; although they had two children (the elder becoming George II), they both had lovers and the marriage was dissolved in 1694. Sophia Dorothea was imprisoned in Celle, prevented from remarrying, and died thirty years later. George, likewise, never remarried. He succeeded Queen Anne to the British throne in 1714, being her closest Protestant relative. (She had over 50 Catholic relatives with better claims.)
